Hey,
Although i dont personally have any sata drives, i have installed onto various machines that do, and never once had a problem. All the kernel modules, and drivers are there straight away and pick up the sata drives no problem, so aslong as your mobo can see all 300 gigs of the drive, then SuSE should be able to aswel.
As for the ATi card, i have heard that those drivers have come a fair distance over the past year, so hopefully its not gonna be as hard as you think?
i have a dual-boot system - half of my SATA drive is for Windows and half is for openSUSE 10.2. i did not encounter any troubles referring SATA drive, so it should work fine for your.
