OK I downloaded and installed. -- Did a NEW install rather than an upgrade from RC1.

On the login Boot screen it is marked as version SUSE 10.0.42.

Onlya few probs so far (none Earth shattering and they can be ignored )

1) On installation -- KDEPIM is missing something --the default set of packages will ask you to Manually fix it (KDE users). --I chose not to bother to install KDEPIM --It's something to do with those horrible Palmtop computers --YMMV on those but they are NOT for me --screens too small and fiddly and I don't like those writing pens.

2) EXIT from KDE still needs CTRL-Z once you get back into the console ( I always start INIT 3 as I like to see what's happenning --especially for "Beta" type releases.
After hitting CTRL-Z you get your prompt again nodenameuser$ > where you can then type in your SHUTDOWN or other commands.

3) If you have previous Linux USER partitions e.g such as /VOL2, /DATA3 or whatever and you want to KEEP these don't let the system go for the automatic option --otherwise you may get a fsck error after the ist CD has been installed and the system is doing its initial boot for the rest of the install. (Mounting other STANDARD partitions such as /HOME, /VAR or however you've defined your system will be OK. For testing I've got all the Linux stuff under a single / (root) partition. After installation the other partitions can be added to fstab and works fine.

4) GRUB won't install on a USB external drive --at least it wouldn't on mine if Windows is already on another (non USB) hard disk. I don't have any IDE disks -- I use SATA / external controller cards for my drives --no probs here.

5) DVD playing etc -- works fine but get Libdvdcss / Libxine from the pacman site as before

6) Wireless (Ndiswrapper) --fine -- Linksys wpc54g Broadcom chipset card

7) TV playing etc fine -- but DISABLE the VIDEO4LINUX2 option otherwise you can't exit the application. Leave the Video4Linux (without the 2) enabled. For sound ensure it's configured to use OSS and not ALSA. Also ensure users are made members of AUDIO, USERS and VIDEO groups. (Note I'm using the old Hauppage WinTV card with I think the BT878 chipset -- the really OLD one --still works fine).

8) Otherwise everything is "Kosher".

I think 10.0 will be a real Winner. Boots and shutsdown really fast as well.

If anybody has a fix for the KDE exit problem (CTRL-Z needed) PLEASE POST.

Thanks for the heads up. This is definitely a bleeding edge alpha release! I wonder if we'll see a 10.2 Alpha version soon.

You will only get Alpha, Beta and RC releases of 10.1 until sometime in February next year. The roadmap is somewhere on the opensuse website.

Actually apart from the KDE problem (CTRL-Z to exit and I can actually get round this by shutting down from a Console while in KDE) I haven't had any probs with this release and IT REALLY FLIES.

I'm only running it on a file server and not running any complicated apps on it so I'm keeping it until I feel a compelling need to change it.

My Laptop is still running SUSE 9.3 -- I'll probably get the retail 10.0 this week for the laptop.

But if you've got a machine to spare or not dooing really complicated things the 10.0 Alpha 1 looks REALLY GOOD.

Alpha or RC1 is newer?

10.0 RC <---older
10.1 Alpha <---- VERY new

I was also thinking of purchasing the retail version of SUSE 10 (it's only $59.99), but are there any big benefits compared to the OpenSUSE version? I know retail comes packaged with applications preinstalled, documentation, and tech support, whereas OpenSUSE, you would need to get them manually? Does this mean the retail version allows DVD, MP3, MPG, AVI, etc... support built in?

I'm deciding whether to continue my Mandriva support ($125/year) or switch to supporing SUSE.

The alpha is for 10.1 and the RC1 is for 10.0.
