I'm new when it comes to what software is available for Linux so can someone help me pick a good all purpose music player? Or maybe help me make one the default? I have SuSe 10.0 installed and I can't seem to listen to any streaming audio... I can't listen to aac streams... I can open .pls stuff which then links me to a stream but I get nothing from the default Kaffeine player... Maybe it's configured wrong? Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. I love SuSe... it's the first distro to recognize all my hardware
EDIT:
I tried amaroK but I don't hear any sound from that... Maybe I need codecs? Where would I doenload some in an rpm fashion so I can easily install them and not have too many configs to change so I don't mess more stuff up.
I installed it from yast and even installed the graphical part. Problem is... I get the same thing I get with amaroK... Nothing. I even added the codecs to the list of XMMS install. See, I hear sounds in SuSe like error messages or tone from the SIP phone and even music on hold on the SIP phone, but I can't play an mp3 or a streaming mp3... What could be wrong?
Also, thank you very much for the quick answers.
EDIT:
I tried DIVX movies also from a DVD and the default player, Kaffeine, goes through like 3 minutes in one second and doesn't show a picture or make a sound. I just see the time bar increase like crazy.
SECOND EDIT:
I have been reading through the posts and aparently SuSe's YAST stuff, like xmms, kaffeine, and dvd players come "stripped" of mp3 and dvd funcionality. I've read that packman is better than yast in this aspect and that I should remove yast stuff that deals with dvd and mp3 and all dependent libraries, then install packman stuff. Here's my problem... How do I find everything that is mp3 dependent and installed by YAST? Then, how do I uninstall it? I am guessing packman has prepacked rpm's with menu items for the programs? Can anyone point me to a howto? I just installed SuSe today and everything is working great but the multimedia side of it (no mp3 music or streams, no divx movies, no other streams, no aac, etc...). So I basically have an office computer and I can't trick the boss cause I really can't play any multimedia files. Problem is... I wanna use the computer as a home computer. Are there any how-to's out there?
Have you run a search here? If you did you would find at least 3 website links to help with no mp3, dvd, wmv files etc. It is because free SuSE doesn't come with any of that, you ahve to download it seperately.
You need to be more specific about problems up front, because amarok is a great media player, I love it. But you do indeed need codecs. Try using the forum search for "install mp3 SuSE" or other phrases, you will find a few hundred about how to do it, mostly with the same few sites listed as fixes.
As for specific how tos, packman is a repository, guru is a repository. What you really want is an article called Hacking OpenSuSE, it is a Jem Report, and gives a very detailed walkthrough of how to install mp3 support, divx, wmv, quicktime, flash player, Sun's Java, Adobe PDF reader...
I'm going to try all of the report out tomorrow cause pizza is here for tonight and I'm dead tired. By the way, I love this forum. Everyone's really helpful Thanks a lot to all.
Those instructions worked like a charm. Only had one issue: SuSe didn't install with gcc so I had to install it from YaST so I could get DVD playback rpm installed. Other than that it was straight forward. Thanks all
I think it's just that SuSe is so cool with this new release that lots of people want to use it and they see that after they install it they have sound but no mp3 or dvd functionality. The link above is good though. I loved it.
OK so I have DVD, and I have streaming audio although not in windows media format and I have mp3 playback. Now, is there any way to get movies.yahoo.com to play the trailers? I have kaffeine, xmms, mplayer, real player 10... None of them will play the stream in firefox or in konqueror. Is it easy to fix this? Is there any way to play streaming video in firefox? How about streaming windows media format audio like radio stations? Thanks a lot.
