mounting and fstab
I have SLED 10.1 and I need to mount my flash drives/external hard drive. I can get into and edit fstab but I don't know what exactly is needed to be added or changed. I also don't know how to save the fstab after modification.
(the problem being the drives are not automatically mounting)
You would use the drive designation as your usb drive comes up depending on the usb plug you use and other drives in your system. In my test case, the usb drive came up as "sdc1", but you must use the right one for your drive.
You need to create a folder location to map the drive. If you have a Windows folder already, you could add a folder called "D" or anything you like. This is where the usb drive will appear when it is mounted. The folder must exist before you can map a drive to it.
To edit fstab, start a terminal session and enter "su" and the root password. Type in the following command:
vi /etc/fstab
Press the Insert key and go to the end of the file and enter the above line as shown with your drive designation and correct mapping folder name. When done adding in the line press the escape key and enter the following command:
:wq
You would need to exit the terminal mode and restart your computer leaving the usb drive connection and it will be mapped for you at startup.
I'm using Suse 10.2 , and I have a problem regarding my external firewire hard drive. For some reason, despite being hotpluggable, it is not automatically mounted. I believe HAL/DBUS does the mounting. How do I get it to mount my external drive?
As a temporary measure, I am mounting it manually, but it is tricky. Every time I restart the computer, it gets assigned a different block device node (sdc , sdh , sdg). I understand I can mount by label or uuid, but I don't have a clue how to do it. Can anyone help?
