I need help in setting up this file correctly. I have my network all setup correctly, I am able to ping lan pcs and even internet ips, but I cannot resolve any dns. /etc/resolv.conf wasn't even on my system so I made on but I'm not sure what to put in to it so my internet can work.
nameserver = ?
Do I just put my gateways ip here, or my wan ip? Any other lines needed? Any help would be appreciated.
BTW I'm running suse 9.1 The connection is DSL handled by my WRT-54G linksys router.
The nameserver is an optional thing, I forget, but if you have to put something in it, just put something like your computer name, it doesn't matter unless you know what it is, then you know what to put in it.
I guess u r not able to browse the internet as ur system is unable to resove the dns queries, if so then its pretty simple,
1. ur system is unable to resolve human friendly names of internet sites to their corresponding ip addresses.
2. ur system has no dns server so it does not know where to go to lookup for the dns queries.
3. yep its the /etc/resolv.conf u should go into nd tell ur system the address of a dns server to be used.
4. give the ip address of a dns server in /etc/resolve.conf lik.
nameserver 1.2.3.4
there is also a parameter 'domain' usually found in this file, ignore it this time. Better if u go thru yast2/yast and go into devices then to network card then select ur card nd edit its config. then select appropriate field that tell abt changing of dns settings u can now give three ip addresses for ur dns servers. go thru the way u like. c u
