carzy internet issues

So im trying suse 9.2 here, and i like it a lot more than any distro ive tried before, the only issue is that my internet will work in certain places and not in others. For example here at home, it will work on my xp partition but not my suse. It recognizes both my gigabyte lan and the wireless, and they work at the library at school, but neither does here at home, ive turned off the firewall, but thats about it. Im pretty new and have no idea where else to go.

Are you talking about a wired connection or a wireless connection? Based on your description, it sounds like you're talking about wireless, and if things work at the library and at school but not at home, then the explanation would be that your school/library are within range of a hotspot, but your house is not.

Can you provide more details and background about this issue? -- J.W.

sorry for being vague,
im talking about wireless and wired connectivity not working at home, but both work on my xp side,
the wireless issue could be i have a encyrpted network, and i dont know how to add the password, but that still doesnt change my problem with the wired side, here at home.
its really odd becuase both wired and wireless work at my law library at school, but then sometime they do and dont at the undergraduate library, its madness, It any case, everything always works on my xp side everywhere, its driving me nuts becuase i like this suse distro by far the best

does your internet connection go through a router? If so, you may have a problem with the dns-server settings.

Just curious, why do you encrypt your home network?

What kind of router do you have?

How does one add the wep or whatever to suse?

i am going through a router here, would i have to change the dns settings on the router? why would it be any different than any other dchp computer? all other linux distros work fine, or is a setting in suse i would have to change.
sorry for being so new

the reason i encrypt it at home is i figure why not, keeps any neighbors from using it, and it doesnt really take any effort to do

I could be wrong, but I think MuzikQuest was suggesting that you may be having dhcp problems, specifically with the dns. If you cannot get on, then try to ping one of the following:

google.com has address 216.239.37.99
google.com has address 216.239.39.99
google.com has address 216.239.57.99

If you cannot get packets returned from these IP addresses, then you have more to worry about then dns. If they do come back, then it almost certainly is dns related.

check the following command:
route -n

look for the line that starts all zeros. The next IP address in the line should be your default gateway. compare this to the IP address you get in windows. Start-> run-> cmd-> ipconfig

It probably wont help in this situation, but you can also always renew your dhcp lease with:
dhcpcd -n
(The command depends on what dhcp client you are using. SuSE uses dhcpcd)
