Can't get past desktop background

I have tried to install Opensuse 11.2 (Gnome-Live) and run it as my main OS.

When i rebooted after install it would go to login and the desktop wallpaper would come up and that was it.

Nothing else loaded, no panels, icons, just the green background.

Any suggestions to fix this at all?

Right now I am under XP, but would rather use Opensuse.

My hardware consists of the following:

Dell sx260
1 gb Ram
20 gb HD
intel 82845g graphics.

The actual live-cd ran perfectly.

Thanks for your time.

Did you read and try the response from the opensuse forum you posted on ?
http://forums.opensuse.org/install-b...top-login.html

When you boot up, you should get a countdown which allows you to edit the boot parameters.
hit any key to stop the countdown.

If there is a FAILSAFE menu option choose that.

If not, edit the boot parameters (it should say which keys to use to do that)

add

1

to the end of the existing parameters, leaving a space before the 1.

then hit enter.

Which ever method you chose, when it's finished booting you will be in a single user mode.
This means you are root, so be very careful what you type !

type

telinit 5

then hit enter.

the system should enter graphical mode and prompt you to login.

I am only explaining what the other poster said, I don't know if it will fix your problems.

regards

Alan

My first guess is video driver.

After it boots up, see if you can get to a terminal by doing ctrl-alt-F1 (or maybe F2 or F3). If you can, then look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log (eg: enter "more /var/log/Xorg.0.log" ) Look towards the end for error messages and other clues.

Depending on what you find, it might be necessary to install a video driver.

The other thing to try is to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to specify the "vesa" driver. Here is a generic entry in xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"

        Identifier "Card0"
        Driver "nvidia"

EndSection
(some stuff removed) To tell the system to use the vesa driver, I would simply change "nvidia" to "vesa" and then re-start X.
