Awesome installation!

Hello all

A friend recommended I try SuSE for my next distro after having used two Mandrake distros, and I'm glad I did. The installation was a complete breeze! Least painless installation ever!

I am still browsing, but if someone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it: Mandrake used to have a configuration submenu that was used for installing software, it was just called "Install Software" and would bring up the RPM manager. I have been trying to find the SuSE equivalent but haven't found it yet.

Thanks a lot!

YaST, my friend, YaST. Go into YaST and from there under the software tab (at the left) you will see install/remove software at the right. that's the "install/remove software that comes with SuSE" place. for other loose RPMs you download, just browse to them and click them, it'll open a window and as Greythorne said, at the top there's a button to click and that will install it for you. if you want to remove that RPM, you'll go to the YaST install/remove software place and search for it there, and you can right click it and delete it.

Another way to install applications with SuSe (although it is till using YaST) is to right-click on the RPM and select actions / install using YaST. You will be prompted for the root password and the installation will subsequently begin

Installing suse is indeed very easy and straight forward. The easy setup GUI and an explanation bar at the left explaining everything very clearly makes installing it far easier than any other distro i've tried. Even saw all my hardware including my external NTFS formated HD that is connected via a PCMCIA USB 2.0 adapter. I'd say they did a good job.

so far i've used mandrake 10 suse 8.2 suse 9.0 SuSE 9.1 eval and fedora core 2.. I'm VERY new to linux but I think SuSE is superior to the others I've tried so far. The system tools are superior especially yast. I messed around multi-booting xp and a few linux's and the SuSE 9.1 live proved invaluable in fixing all my "borks" in the early stages of learning to partition. I like SuSE a lot and will keep it as my standard linux distro. SuSE is head and shoulders above the rest in terms of installation as far as i know. mandrake hangs up all the time it seems, although I think it performed a little better when installed on a reiser partition. I'm gonna try slackware and debian next.
