Auto set permissions in usbfs - Suse 10

I normally don't ask questions, just keep looking till I find my answers, but I am tired of searching.
I am trying to get bitpim working with my cell phones in linux. I can get it working if I set the permissions on the /proc/bus/usb/001/### file that currently cooresponds with the phone. I want this to happen automatically via hotplug.

After much searching, I discovered that Suse doesn't really use hotplug anymore, but HAL and Udev. It looks like I might be able to create some sort of udev rule to do this, or maybe there is some way to have a script run from the hwup script. I would appreciate any feedback. Just a simple nudge in the right direction will do.

After being able to easily create a usb.usermap file point to a script for a particular Vendor ID and Product ID with hotplug, it seems like the new setup really just complicates things and removes flexibility. Surely that is not the case. I hope. All of the possibilities I have thought of are pretty complicated. I don't want to jump through hoops if I can just move my usermap and script to another directory or do something equally simplistic.

Thanks for the help,

Andrew
