Network Card Did Not Configure During Installation
Hi all,
I am running Ubuntu 14.04LTS. I just installed Slackware 14.1 on a virtual drive in VirtualBox. I went through the configuration steps to finish the install. Everything seemed to go ok, but the network card setup in Slackware evidently did not work; I show no connections and I can not add one through system settings; the add box is greyed out. I tried opening terminal and running netconfig. No help. The system is still not showing a network card and I can't ping anyplace. Any ideas?
What type of network are you using? Wired or wireless? What is the output of lspci -k | grep -iA3 net, ifconfig, and iwconfig? If you're using wirelss, did you choose Network Manager in netconfig?
EDIT: I just realized you were talking about a VM. In your VM settings, under Network, I assume you have "Enable Network Adapter" enabled under the Adapter 1 tab. What options do you have under "Attached to:", "Name:", and "Adapater Type:" (you may need to click "Advanced" for some of these entries). I'll also assume you have "Cable Connected" enabled.

iwconfig:
eth0 no wireless extensions
lo no wireless extensions
In VM Settings, Enable Network Adapter is checked. Attached To: Bridged Adapter (I do this with all my VMs). Name: eth0 (it's the only thing on the drop down menu). Adapter Type: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM). Promiscuous Mode: Allow All. Cable Connected is checked.
ifconfig is showing you have an IP address of 192.168.0.192, so it seems to recognize the network card and has received an IP address from your dhcp server. Have you tried pining local computers? What about your dhcp server/router? If you can connect to that, can you perform a trace route on connecting to something outside your network, like google.com?
Ok, I don't understand this. The Slackware install will now reach the internet, I went to several web sites to verify it. But Network Connections in System Settings still says I have no connections set up, nor will it let me set one... And I don't understand why it didn't work last night, but it works now. Thanks for your help! It's all a learning experience, I guess. It won't see any other computers on my network, but most are windows boxes and I haven't learned how to do that yet. But I just watched a couple videos on youtube and everything seems to be working.
I think the Network Connections in the system tray is designed to work with Network Manager and is geared more towards wireless networks instead of wired.
