Hi Stuart, and thanks for your input.

Coming back to the original point of this thread: I appreciate we are discussing a 3rd party app, and also that Pies are only a small proportion of the Arm family, but do you have any pointers as to why it is so difficult to get the Pi to perform as claimed, video-wise? In particular this apparent mis-match with OpenGL? The combination works well in x86 land, but does seem to have issues in Pi-land!

Googling around provides lots of vague hints, but they are all aimed at the debian/*buntu world, with helpful hints like install "xyz using apt-get and all will be fixed" without any hints as to the underlying question of "why?"! When checking, I find that I have the slack equivalent of "xyz", but still poor video performance.

By by-passing opengl, I've got VLC to play 1080 (mpv did that already, but I needed libvlc for off-air TV) but none of them can cope with 4K. I see hints about 4K using a separate part of the SOC, but no clues as how to access it! I know its possible because Libreelec/Kodi do it, but they seem to be the only ones to have cracked this problem.

Recently there's been lots of talk about using V4L2 to access the magic graphics performance, but again, no real samples or idiot's guides!

Cheers,

Pete

Hi Pete. I don't I'm afraid. I have no interest in the RPi due to the way they operate within the ecosystem.
I think if you want to use an RPi, use whatever they provide, not Slackware.
The only reason Slackware supports the RPi is due to its popularity, but that's the only factor: otherwise, it doesn't pass the acceptance tests (described on the web site).
If what they provide also doesn't work, it's worth looking at a different hardware vendor.

OK, well thanks for your input, anyway!

The only reason I have the Pi400 is because it was a Christmas present from my son a year or two back, so as it has certain sentimental value (grand-kids were involved too!) and Slackware being my preferred operating system, I want to try and wring as much out of it as possible.

It just irks me that it *should* be able to do what I want, but I can't make it do so!

Oh, well, I'll just keep digging slowly. If I do find the magic formula, I'll be sure to post it here.

Cheers,

The RPi are *fantastic* at marketing and building and maintaining links with all of the Linux mags, and building a tonne of great docu. Just a shame they don't know or care about how Open Source actually works.
Oh well. Good luck
