xmms works from terminal as root but not as user

when i type xmms from terminal as root it pops right up if i do that as a normal user it doesn't really do anything. how do i solve this? also some programs in my Applications menu don't work. i bet they work as root though if i type them in the terminal. I am using dropline gnome by the way.
