XFree86 problem in SLACKWARE 8


i have just installed slackware 8 .
but the " startx " is not working it gives error.
tell me how to configure the X server in slckware?
and also how to change the defalut desktop environment easily?
without using the setup command
I will be very gratefull for your help

To configure your x server run xf86config.

TO change the default desktop environment run xwmconfig.

Yeah, during install of Slack, it doesn't configure X, you have to configure it by using either:

xf86config ( I prefer this one ) or

XF86Setup --configure

I just ran across a script in Slack8.1, "xfree86setup", which got x up and running with very little user input. Since the script didn't ask anything about the monitor or display resolution, I still ended up going in to manually edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file to get the display resolution I wanted. But, x did start after that quick script, which was not always true (for me anyway) after running xf86config.
