I installed my Slackware 14.0 on my system when it had an Athlon II X2 250, which is 32bit and 64bit. I installed it as 32bit to skip the headaches and such.

Out of habit, I installed the Nvidia driver (from nvidia, not the opensource stuff) which is the 32bit.

I recently upgraded some hardware, specifically the MoBo and the CPU with the new cpu being an AMD FX-6300, which, I think, is only 64bit.

My question(s):

Do the nvidia drivers work according to the software installed as in my Slackware is 32 bit so I *must* install the nvidia 32bit package?

-or-

Does the driver go by the hardware that it runs off of? As in my cpu now being a 64bit only.

I've installed the latest x86 310.32 driver and things seem to be working fine (though I have no idea how to tell if it's running 3d as it should or not). Will installing the x86_64 310.32 driver be the better one or not?

If you have a 32 bit OS install, you need the 32 bit driver. 64 bit, use the 64 bit one and install the 32 bit libraries.

Your new CPU supports amd64 (ie x86_64) just like your old one, so it supports both 64-bit and 32-bit OSes. If you are still using 32-bit Slackware, then stick with the 32-bit nVidia driver. If you switch to 64-bit Slackware, then use the 64-bit driver (and if you use 64-bit with multilib, then use the 64-bit driver with 32-bit compatibility libraries). Basically, you're in the same situation as before (just with a nicer CPU) so no need to change anything.
