Unhappy When I edit .xinitrc, X will not start...

Hello!

Okay, I'm running Slackware 9.1 with WindowMaker as the default window manager. There are a couple programs I'd like to run, such as xclock, when WM starts. So, I edited my .xinitrc file, and added "exec xclock -digital" to it. However, when I run startx, there's hard-drive activity, then X just shuts down without any error messages or warnings or anything. I even checked the log file in /var/log/, but X never had any errors. It just won't start.

I tried removing "exec" from the command just to see what would happen (nothing). I even tried running a non-graphical program ("named") from .xinitrc, but still, X wouldn't start. When I comment out my little additions, X starts just fine.

When I try adding the commands to the primary xinitrc file in /etc/X11/xinit/, X will start, but my commands do not get executed... :-(

Is there something I'm missing here?

Oh, and one more thing. My tilde key doesn't work. I'm thinking I would have to use xmodmap (however, the tilde should be enabled by default!). I know the keycode for tilde is 0x007e, but I don't know how to use that in the xmodmap command...

I greatly appreciate any help!

Thanks

Yeah! That's what I was forgetting. Geez, stupid mistake.

Thanks!

Any suggestions on the tilde? I'm beginning to think it's a mechanical issue, since I know it has worked before on previous OS installations.
