XFCE is the way ... hope you manage to squeeze something shiny on the new box!
When running desktop machines that have more memory than you can shake a burning stick at, it doesn't really matter what you use.
When you're trying to use a Portege 7020CT to play XviDs over an SMB connection, there's nothing as good as Blackbox! I find even Fluxbox is slow to boot on that laptop =/
I seem to change WM/DEs nearly as often as I try other Distros or *BSD options. I should just accept the facts that I'm a tinkerer, and buy a second machine on which to tinker so my laptop would stay stable for more than a month.
Current choice is Xfce4.2, but am I huge fan of Fluxbox as well.
When I switched from Windows XP to Mandrake 10.1 I figured KDE would be the best to use, I got used to it altho it was a bit bulky.
I started having problems with Mandrake so I switched to Slackware 10.1 and I have been a XFCE4 lover since, so simple and sleek, low memory usage, easy to use.
I used to use KDE because it was the most familiar (K menu, desktop icons, the whole bit). This time 'round (new install of 10.1 on my laptop), I'm goin' for gusto and using FluxBox. Now I just have to figure out how to update it, et cetera. So far, it's been quite the learning experience, as has my entire time using Slackware (check out my signature )
I use Kde, Xfce, Enlightenment, Fluxbox and WindowMaker because I have these windows managers in GoblinX and I have to create design for them...
But I use more WindowMaker...
KDE for higher power systems, IceWM for low performance. I've tried Blackbox/Fluxbox, bet there were too many anoyances. Gnome is mammoth. Most everything else is to basic.
