Hi folks,

After setting up my elegant slackware desktop, my next plan was to install VMWare. VMWare installed fine and all. In fact, previously, I had been running a DragonFly client. But when I installed this time, I think I might have made one fatal error, creating a /tmp directory in the first place. After VMWare was installed and the DragonFly images were made, I booted from the DragonFly CD, but during the middle of the boot sequence, VMWare tells me /tmp is almost full. Apparently VMWare uses /tmp as well to cache all the stuff while running the client.

My fatal error was I only installed the /tmp partition as 256 MB, which I heard was enough from a lot of people. My question is: is there anyway to set a different /tmp directory or am I going to have to resize my /tmp partition? I might as well do that considering it's good practice to know how to.

Also, what's the command that shows how much space is free on each partition? I feel so dumb, I must have forgotten. Thanks.

Thanks for that. Well, now it seems that my /tmp is not even big enough to do other stuff like install enemy territory or america's army. I'm going to have to resize this partition to about 1-1.5 GB. That's the only solution. Anyone know how to do that?

I guess my temporary solution (probably permanent solution) is I just mounted the used to be /tmp partition as /blah and the /tmp now shares space with /. This is fine. I was using gkrellm to monitor disk traffic and, boy, does VMWare drink up your tmp folder. My / partition is 4GB and when I ran VMWare, it came down to 2. I realized I also needed this for things like America's Army. Now I just have 256 MB sitting around in a /blah partition and just need ideas of what I could convert it to.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resize a partition or simply just combine two partition together? Thanks

Hi everyone,

If you're using LVM (Logical Volume Manager) you can use lvextend to resize a partition. Just take a look at "man lvextend".

If you're not using LVM then you'll have to use third party software (i.e. Partition Magic).

Probably there are other ways to do the same thing, but these work for me.
