I'm re-purposing a computer to run MS WIN7 applications to capture video from different sources and drive the backlight feature (slides/negatives) on a scanner. The DV tape transfers should use a 1394 interface.

Is there any Virtual Machine I can run on a Slackware host that will virtualize the 1394 port? I've been happily using VirtualBox with a MS guest for about a year but it doesn't appear to support the 1394 interface. I don't have experience with any other Virtual Machines.

Information, pointers, & opinions on 1394 interface in a VM running on Slackware are welcome.

As a potential alternative is there a program/utility that runs on Slackware to allow me to transfer the DV content from a camera (via 1394)? The captured content would later be used with an MS based video editing software.

I don't think so if the firewire is attached on board. It may be that a new system with a pci add on card might have support in a modern vm.

I get the feeling I had read that some cases a configuration might work if it used networking but I didn't really read the entire article.

jefro thanks for the PCI Passthrough suggestion and the Xen and VBox links. I will investigate this possibility.

I had only seen VM Firewire referenced in some MS file sharing scenarios and VBox kernel debugging, probably both networking.
