Thanks for the link -- actually, that was one of the first things I looked at (and, yup, I did check or do all the described fixes) before posting this.
Additionally, under the rule of can't-hurt-might-help, I have
- Un-installed and reinstalled Thunderbird
- Blown away the .thunderbird directories in user's home directories (restarted them from scratch)
- Started Thunderbird as root the first time (used to be some chrome thing or other that didn't work right if you didn't do this -- remember, can't-hurt...)
- Checked every configuration option
- Double-checked that LDAP is not starting or running (just in case)
- Mumbled a large number of juicy phrases
And, now, I've run dry; I have noted that Seamonkey, with precisely the same configuration and settings, does not do this (yeah, I know they're not at all the same thing, but...).
