Just want to say thanks to 55020 for dusk. The 4.12.4 kernel has fixed the problem of resuming from hibernate I was having with the 4.9 kernels in -current. The problem was with the i915 kernel module and the Intel 945GME in the hardware.

Just FYI.
Thanks, again.
Just tried the Dusk 4.12.4 kernel and it works with VirtualBox. Unfortunately, I can't say if that is the result of changes in the kernel or changes in the most recent version of VirtualBox or a combination thereof.

4.12.4 for me the generic build make oldconfig no issues the huge kernel build make oldconfig unable to load udev stalls at switch=change something like that. play with it later. Any input is nice.

The number scheme their using is confusing. So 4.1.43 trumps 4.9.xx and 4.12.xx?

Just the opposite.

https://www.kernel.org/

The 4.12.xxx is the latest "Stable Kernel." The 4.9.xx is the most recent Long Term Service Kernel. The 4.4.xxx is a older stable kernel, and so on....
The 4.13.xx is the latest development kernel and will become the next Stable kernel after 6 or 7 or 8 release candidates.
The next long term kernel is, as of the moment, scheduled to be the 4.14 series, but it isn't even in development, yet.

New kernels 4.12.6, 4.9.42, 4.4.81 and 3.18.64 are out now.

https://www.kernel.org/

3.18.64 is supposed to be EOL but keeps on getting updated. Apparently it is a kernel used for Android phones.
