Sound problem

Recently installed Slack 10.0 on a P4 3Ghz with i VIA mainboard (VT8237) and was hoping to get some sound out of it (out of the on-board sound-card offcourse)

went to a commandline, typed alsaconf. It found the card and configured it and everything seemed to be going well, BUT no sound.

What could possibly be the cause ?

(i also have to say that when i first started x on the machine it came with a error about opening /dev/dsp (or something like that) and i clicked it away to soon to actually read what stood there, but i allready figured out what the message was about: I noticed that in the BIOS the sound-card was disabled. So the error is allready gone)

and no, the card isn't broken cause with the dual boot (win2003) the sound works

after running alsaconf audio is muted by default so you need to run alsamixer. next to each item name at the top if it says "[off]" that means its muted, so type "m" to unmute then adjust the volume for each of the channels. press esc to exit then as root type "alsactl store" to save the settings for the next boot. if after rebooting you get no sound again use "alsactl restore" as root to bring back the settings you saved, although it should happen automatically.

I had essentially the same problem with no sound... Here's what I did:

1) Make new file in ~/.kde/Autosrtart (with "execute" option) named alsaInit.sh
2) Open the file with a text editor of choice (KEdit, etc)
3) Put this:
Code:
#/bin/bash
amixer set 'VIA DXS',0 100%
amixer set 'VIA DXS',1 100%
amixer set 'VIA DXS',2 100%
amixer set 'VIA DXS',3 100%
Use the entire code. It seems as though the VIA DXS settings automatically reset to 0 on reboot. You can change the %'s to whatever you want if you need to lower them. VIA DXS 0 appears to be the main on to be concerned about if this is an issue.

I ran alsamixer and un-muted and adjusted the volumes. But still no sound.

I also tried saving the alsa settings but at reboot the settings were gone.
How exactly should i issue the alsactl store command.

1) su root -c "alsactl store"
2) su
password
alsactl store

?

And another thing. When i run alsamixer at the default runlevel i get completely other results than i get in X.

Edit: Ok, i am a little bit further, i used "digitialhead's" script and i started X and noticed the "kde starting sound". But when i play a game i get no sound.

Ok, right now i don't get it anymore.

I was testing my sound like this.
In my VMware session running slackware i opened a game "patato guy" and when i played that game it made some sounds.
But when i play that same game on my real slack box i don't here those sounds. BUT i downloaded a few MP3's and they played just fine...

My alsaInit.sh right now look like this

#bin/bash
amixer set Master 100% unmute
amixer set PCM 100% unmute
amixer set 'VIA DXS',0 100%
amixer set 'VIA DXS',1 100%
amixer set 'VIA DXS',2 100%
amixer set 'VIA DXS',3 100%

THnax for the info.. but i am still wondering why the sounds for those games don't work, anyone an idea ?

They might use sound from the LFE setting. I would suggest editing the script to boost everything you might need the same way you added/unmuted/boosted Master and PCM.
