Perhaps someone can come up with a working LXC template for Slackware, containing skype and elogind?

Hmm, interesting. Well that is slightly encouraging

Are you using Proton? This doesn't seem to affect games, only updates.

This prompted me to further analyze Steam's logs, specifically ~/.local/share/Steam/logs/bootstrap_log.txt. This logs the updates process. It only happened when updating from 'Startup - updater built Oct 31 2018 00:16:21' to Startup - updater built Nov 3 2018 22:18:50. At which point I removed Skype and the update successfully completed. I could have been something with that particular update. So I am going to reinstall skypeforlinux with the 'skype-dbus-mock' trick and see what happens on the next update.

Edit: Installing stable version 8.33.0.41

Yes, the Proton window is the same as yours, but Steam here is updated at Oct 13 2018 and it says that client is up-to-date.
With that new Proton version I can play Doom3 BFG Edition -but I don't know if it is the Windows or some Linux port- and
Rage, which is for sure the Windows version since it was not ported.
The only difference is that I'm not on beta in Steam, maybe this beta is the Nov 3 update.

I'm using these packages skypeforlinux-8.33.0.41-x86_64-1ponce and steamclient-1.0.0.54-i386-1alien.

I build my own skypeforlinux, the important stuff is similar to ponce's SlackBuild. Some differences are my builds are not SBo compatible. I download within the script, use the rpm package of skypeforlinux so I can check version before downloading, choice of downloading, building the stable or preview version of Skype.

Also using Alien Bob's steamclient, same version. Have version 8.33.0.41 installed with the skype-dbus-mock fix, waiting to see what happens with the next update. Games are playing okay.

Got an Steam update today. Processed successfully with skypeforlinux 8.33.0.41 installed with the skype-dbus-mock trick. I am beginning to think I am wrong with the skype-dbus-mock trick affecting Steam.

Another update today no issues at all. I am going to start Skype and keep it running, I normally shut it down if not using it. Steam is always running. It is very encouraging.

Hmm, I must be doing something wrong here. I upgraded to 8.33 using ruario's new script, but Skype now doesn't start. I went back to 8.29 and everything is OK again.

EDIT: Do I have to do this in addition to using the script?

No ruario's script includes the skype-dbus-mock fix. See lines 183 to 186 in the script. Running 8.33.0.41 here.

Odd. You're running -current, aren't you. I wonder if that makes any difference. Oh well, I hope 8.29 works for the forseeable future. If not I could try a manual method and the old script.

Unfortunately confirmed. I used ruario's script, yes it fails with 8.33.0.41. Nothing happens using the menu or via a terminal. Installed my own package too, fails with expected results. Skype 8.29.0.50 works, with this version the skype-dbus-mock fix is not needed.

I ran skypeforlinux 8.33.0.41 with the skype-dbus-mock fix directly and it produced an error. Since I don't have Guest Additions installed I attached a screen shot.

This is a clean Slackware64-14.2 installation with latest patches.

Great work, thanks for checking, Chris. That's useful info, I wonder if something can be done to remedy this. It's good that we found this out before MS force a change from 8.29.
