Slackware64 install gone wrong

Today I tried to install Slackware64 14.0 on my laptop with a new hard drive I was given which works and is a 1TB. It's not working I am thinking theres limitation to hard drive size but I can't find anything about hard drive limitations for lilo can't ever find anything when I need it. So here I have a screen that says all this assuming it's all from lilo.

Sorry, but the attempt to install LILO has returned an error, so LILO has not been correctly installed. You'll have to use a bootdisk to start your machine instead. It should still be possible to get LILO working by editing the /etc/lilo.conf and reinstalling LILO manually. See the LILO man page and documentation in /mnt/usr/doc/lilo-23.2 for more help. The error message may be seen above.

i chose standard for the options about resolutions and color depth this time around still same error and so thank you for your help I hope to hear back quickly as this is very important to me to get Slackware up on my laptop

This seems to a problem with partitioning on the new drive. Did you partition the drive using fdisk or cfdisk? I would suggest cfdisk. http://docs.slackware.com/slackware:...l#partitioning

One other thought, perhaps check to see if you need to make a BIOS setting to allow changes to the boot sector. If you used cfdisk, the changes may not have actually been written to the disk.

well according to there i am not partitioning anythng wrong and on the other hand I'm also not partitioning any differently then I ever have only difference is the hard drive size

Could hard drive size be part of my issue? Could my BIOS supposedly not be able to handle a 1TB hard drive...? Is that even possible? This is a HP Pavilion G7-1328dx I bought it only a year ago at Best Buy. It's gotta be a fairly new computer as it is a quad core amd cpu it's it's the a-series so I would expect the BIOS has nothing to do with it but you never know

I don't have anything like that in my bios my bios it a very basical and minimal bios on this computer which btw I hate

I do not think so. When I google I see ads for upgrading that laptop to a 1TB drive.
Any chance that this drive was previously formatted with GPT?

Hi,

I just installed Slackware64 on a pair of HP Pavilion G7 for a client. You have to partition your disk using 'gdisk' (and NOT 'fdisk'). You can also use the alternative frontend called 'cgdisk'. Also, check if "legacy mode" is enabled in the BIOS.

Did you create an LVM, or did you just do straight up partitions?

We don't have enough information to figure this out.

Please post:

The output from this command: fdisk -l
The lilo.conf (/mnt/etc/lilo.conf) file
The make/model of the laptop

I would have no way oh knowing that for sure but I have a pretty good change of being right if i say no

Ummmm does cgdisk or gdisk come on the slackware disk? if so I'll find out in a minute if it doesn't then well how do I get it so i can use it?

So cgdisk is on the disk do i need to use cgdisk? I've never heard of this tool before so I'm a litter wary if you don't mind plus I really dont' wanna sit here and waste my time fixing this issue and it not work I'm annoyed I was expecting a smooth ride here and upset that it's not

but it happens I guess though I'll just go with it

after about 20 minutes of messing with stuff i understand cgdisk and gdisk now and am going on with the installation and hoping it will work

Those of you giving me simple slackware install documents...No offense but your not helping this isn't a basic issues of something I installed wrong I have litereally done over 100 slackware installs almost all done the same way I do my install traditionally partition one / partition two /home partition three /usr/local and partition four swap. I've done everything over and over again 5 times with this computer if I made a mistake I would have caught it by now -.-

Now I have found something very insteresting while I was repairing an issue that happened because of my stupidity when working on this issue to my windows hard drive...my first partition on my hard drive is the /boot directory the very first partition and starts 2048 sectors or whatever in. does this maybe mean anything?
