Slackware64 14.2 + MultiLib + Linux 4.4.115 ( Thanks for the quick turn-around Alien Bob )

All --

Installed yesterday's updates, except for:

Code:
# BlackList:  patches/packages/gcc-5.5.0-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz
# BlackList:  patches/packages/gcc-g++-5.5.0-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz
# BlackList:  patches/packages/gcc-gfortran-5.5.0-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz
# BlackList:  patches/packages/gcc-gnat-5.5.0-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz
# BlackList:  patches/packages/gcc-go-5.5.0-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz
# BlackList:  patches/packages/gcc-java-5.5.0-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz
# BlackList:  patches/packages/gcc-objc-5.5.0-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz
I did `upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new *.t?z` with Alien Bob's MultiLib Packages instead:
Code:
gcc-5.5.0_multilib-x86_64-1alien.txz
gcc-g++-5.5.0_multilib-x86_64-1alien.txz
gcc-gfortran-5.5.0_multilib-x86_64-1alien.txz
gcc-gnat-5.5.0_multilib-x86_64-1alien.txz
gcc-go-5.5.0_multilib-x86_64-1alien.txz
gcc-java-5.5.0_multilib-x86_64-1alien.txz
gcc-objc-5.5.0_multilib-x86_64-1alien.txz
Next, I set up lilo.conf for vmlinuz-huge-4.4.115 and rebooted into 4.4.115 HUGE without an initrd.

Then I followed my normal Kernel Update procedures from there: made a pair of initrd files and reinstalled NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-390.25.run.

Tested ( HUGE no initrd ), ( HUGE + intel-ucode.cpio ) and ( GENERIC + intel-ucode.cpio + a local initrd file ).

All combinations work as expected.

Thanks to Pat and the Team and EXTRA thanks to Alien Bob for the timely 14.2 Multilib Updates !

The 4.4.115 Kernel has listed spectre v2 on my i7 6700K Laptop as mitigated today ( woo hoo ):

Code:
# gawk '{ print FILENAME ":\t" $0 }' /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/*

/sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/meltdown:       Mitigation: PTI
/sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v1:     Vulnerable
/sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v2:     Mitigation: Full generic retpoline

I'll second that thanks to AlienBob and the great write-ups he has on Slackware Docs. Following the instructions for multilib, I took the more safe route for slackpkg+, which I installed months ago,

Code:
# slackpkg update
# slackpkg upgrade multilib
# slackpkg install multilib
then simply downloaded the files from packages.slackware.com and installpkg all the files in /patches/linux-4.4.115,
Code:
# cd {/directory where you downloaded the files}
# installpkg kernel-{each of the files ending in .tgz except only one -generic or -huge}
next
Code:
# cd /boot
# /usr/share/mkinitrd/mkinitrd_command_generator.sh vmlinuz-generic[or huge]-4.4.115
which will generator the initrd command necessary as a base which I then strip the "-c" and add "-h /dev/cryptvg/swap" and "-P /boot/intel-ucode.cpio". It will also show the lilo stanza which must be added to /etc/lilo.conf with vi or emacs. Last thing to remember is to issue lilo and see if any errors are generated. I use an initrd, because I have LVM and LUKS for my primary disk, I keep the older modules, and I have generated separately the intel microcode update, although my CPU doesn't have a fix yet I keep up the practice. Cheers.
