On behalf of Patrick Volkerding and the Slackware team I am pleased to announce the immediate availability of this shiny new distribution.
As it includes too many new or updated packages to list all here, please see the appended Readme.
You will notice that Slackware 1.1.2 ships the recently released kernel 0.99.15 as well as Smalltalk 1.1.1, the Smalltalk Interface to X and ParcPlace's Object Builder 2.0.
I had it installed and running for a while, but can't remember what it was like. Currently giving it another shot in VirtualBox - so far, the first floppy boots fine, I'll try installing it in a little while...
1. The files that need to go on the floppies to install from in the virtual machine.
2. Floppy images of the files from 1 named a1.img,a2.img ... x10.img. Boot off the first one (a1.img) to start the installation. Then read!
3. If you can't be bothered to install it yourself, you can just download this, make a virtual machine in VirtualBox, point it at this VDI file, and then boot from the drive. It has lilo installed, so should just boot to a login prompt. There's only a root user (no password).
Specs for the virtual machine I set up were:
128MB RAM
8MB Graphics RAM
128MB Hard drive (see download above).
I haven't got the archives needed to install X (I think you need the SLS X packages for that), but everything else seems to work OK.
You can use 3.5" virtual floppies instead, according to annonce.txt file in the a1 directory:
Quote:
The Slackware Linux distribution (v. 1.01) is now available for
anonymous FTP. This is a complete installation system designed for
386/486 systems with a 3.5" boot floppy. 486 optimizations are now
used for most of the included software.
The first computer I used at work, back in 1978, brand DTC (Data Terminal and Communications), model MicroFile, had one (or two ?) 8" floppy disk drive(s), an OS of its own, an Intel 8080 and 64 Kb RAM. Dunno if you can still find one in a museum.
