OK

I have three files

xorg.conf : changing "nv" to nvidia" kills xserver

xorg.conf-fbdev and xorg.conf-vesa : changes do not affect xserver ; no nvidia splash screen either

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5328-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run can be installed successfully. xorg.conf changes did not work

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run

cannot be installed

Regards

The errors should be logged in /var/log/nvidia-installer.log
Look at this file to figure out what are the errors when you try
to compile and install the driver

I was lost in wilderness now back to slackware

I have question on sound card

how to execute instruction from another member

blacklist snd-intel8x0m bu adding snd-intel 8x0m at the end /etc/hotplug/blacklist. Itried this error command found. This was to correct sound card problems and use alsamixer to tune the sound

I setup adsl using adsl-setup at root

when adsl-start was tried igot the following error

connection timed out error at adsl-start /usr/bin/adsl-start line 194 742 terminated $connect "$@" >dev/null2 >&1 What does this mean in terms of setting up adsl

For the ADSL modem, when you are in windows, how can you configure it?

Some of my friends have a connection with sympatico in canada and they
have to do the following things to make the modem work.

There is some models that you have to connect with a web browser at
some address like 192.168.2.1 . After that you can configure it. If this is
the case, there is a chance that the router program is already inside the
modem an pppoe can't work with it. Try to configure your ethernet card
with DHCP support. To do that, edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inetd.conf and for the line
USE_DHCP[0]="" change to USE_DHCP[0]="yes" . If the interface is eth0
change the line according to that.
Close the interface: ifconfig eth0 down
Restart it: /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1
Check ifconfig eth0 and if it was successfull you must have an address
like inet addr:192.168.2.13 or something like that.

Shashank, simply add
Code:
snd-intel8x0m
To the end of /etc/hotplug/blacklist
Reboot, and run alsaconf again. That should solve your sound problem.

Restart Slackware and you'll get adsl-start working, ok? I donno why it happens. perhaps the pppd is running in the background or something else. I have BSNL dataone connection.

regarding nvidia: i do it like this:
----------------------------------------
1. run 'xorgsetup'
2. open vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
3. find 'nv' by typing /nv and pressing enter
4. replacing nv with nvidia

5. sh NVidia-installer-something.sh

sound:
---------
1. alsaconf
2. keep pressing enter key till it's over prompting
3. alsamixer (set MASTER and PCM volume high)
4. alsactl store (store the volume as default)
