Very unfair comment. I have been using Slackware for all my work (which included writing 3 text books in computer engg field) since early 1990's. I have never regretted it.

L.M.A.O.

But we love jokes.

That's why we use Slackware after all.

And if you happen not to be able to do something with Slackware, welcome to Linuxquestions, if anywhere, this is the place most likely to get you going (and doing it).

Thank you for your input, but I'll be the best judge of what it takes to increase my happiness.

Your sig says your location is "in your head" so may I suggest you get out more? Is Debian a joke? Buster, the stable release, does have a slightly newer kernel at 4.19.x than stock 14.2 at 4.4.x but my 14.2 install is running 5.4.1 and my -Current is running 5.4.2. I compiled them with my own custom config in about 15 minutes from the vanilla source with no distro patches, stock stable from kernel.org, the same day they were released. They both have the proprietary nVidia latest drivers installed by nVidia's own installer from runlevel 3. Try that on most distros.

Hey if you really like, or need, having your hand held by your fave distro maintainers while you become more and more boxed in and less and less the actual owner of your PCs, well knock yourself out. If there's a joke here it's me who is laughing, since I am still loving Slackware after 20+ years despite testing many dozens of distros over those years. Whatever twirls ur beanie, right?

I do mildly wonder what exactly it is that you imagine Slackers suffer from 3 1/2 years of only moderate updates? What do you think you can do that I, or anyone else here, can't do?

Err, ladies and gentleman, this is the thread of clairvoyant wits, not yet another of those "why Slackware is the best Linux there is out there and no one could ever persuade us otherwise, not even Darth Wader came to force choke us to almost dead"

Can we please return to witty uninformed guesswork now?

If there is any need for such yet another thread (and i highly doubt there is, but it's just me) maybe someone should open the "the most ultimate final answer to why Slackware still matters in 2019/2020"?

I miss Darth, although I think he is lurking around here somewhere.

I have slightly amended my stance on missing Darth. Looking at old posts of his, he clearly knew his onions technically, but he was a consistent troll and started a lot of arguments intentionally. There have been a lot fewer fights and disagreements since he left [or was pushed out]. So while it was entertaining having him here, it's probably better for the community overall that he's gone.

The best stance to take with a difficult member is to ignore his posts and allow the moderators to do their job if needed. I suggest that we get back on topic. I think we're closer to 15.0.

There is one important point that I feel I should make. A 'good' troll makes posts which do not appear as trolling but merely differences in opinion which are perceived as controversial by the community, i.e. such trolling pushes the onus of blame onto other forum members so the troll gets off scot-free, and when challenged, can always defend his opinion as just being different or unpopular. In such cases, the mods rarely step in because little can be proven [even though they did eventually here, but on a technicality].

DV was very clever like this, and when he got his reactions, he just stepped back to watch the fireworks go off. Add to this some dry humour and tech knowledge and you have a popular poster who was an entertaining troll - but a troll nevertheless.

I only mention this so that such instances may be observed in the future should they happen again with other posters.

I believe he found our lack of dependency resolution: "disturbing".

I do have the impression that some posters here on LQ were/are only helping just to earn some kind of "troll allowance" which they can then "spent" for trolling purposes. And the Slackware forum seems to be a popular target for it, at least that is my observation, so far.

Personally, I was never entertained. I always thought that those troll posts and the accompanying "fallout" were rather distracting. They away the focus from the actual problem that was supposed to be discussed in the thread ... or maybe I just have a small attention span

Back to the topic at hand . . .

I have to confess that I check the changelogs almost daily to see if there's news of an upcoming new release.

Same. We're getting daily updates to -current. I *really appreciate* the furious pace of development in the -current branch. Many thanks to Mr. Volkerding and the Slackware Team.
