Slackware 13.37, problem with saving documents, files with local letters

Hi.

I have another problem with Slackware. It really bugs me. In fact when i have local letters - in this example POLISH LETTERS - in file name i can't write it to a disk. I've recently tried Ubuntu 11.04 and there is no such thing, there is no such problem. I can save, copy - everything works but with Slackware, since when i started to trying this, the same problem occurs.

I will give an example.

In english we have name
Code:
LUK
. Name LUK in polish is written like this:
Code:
ŁUKASZ
As you can see, there is polish letter Ł. But with this kind of letters i cant copy file from www (for an example - firefox can't save www with polish letters), and other programs can't do it also - libre/open office, the same thing happens all the time.

This may help. I opened firefox, and tried to save from google maps one addres name:
Code:
KOŚCIUSZKI
. There is polish letter Ś. In english it would be Kosciuszki. As soon as a save it with polish letter Ś this happens:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The same thing happens with folder names. If i want create a folder called
Quote:
ŁUKASZ
than in fact i will have something like
Code:
?ukasz

I tried with something like this in /etc/fstab:

Code:
/dev/sda5 /mnt/hd/S160_NTFS ntfs-3g locale=pl_PL.ISO8859-2 0 0

I found it on some www with Linux, but it doesen't work. Can you help me? Ubuntu doesen't have problem with it - i tried it with english version set to a polish language interface.

I really don't know for sure if this will help but have you tried setting your locale to UTF-8 or ISO? You probably don't want an English locale and you can pick from the list produced by
Code:
locale -a
Sorry I don't know what the country code is for Poland right off the top.

You can modify the locale setting in /etc/profile.d/lang.sh; be sure to read all of the notes in that file and select accordingly. When you make a change to the locale you probably ought to reboot for everything to take effect.

Also, take a look at Dugan Chen's excellent write-up about fonts and character sets at http://duganchen.ca/writings/slackware/fonts.

Hope this helps some.

I also recommend Dugan's excellent tutorial. It should solve your problem.

Output from locale -a

pl_PL
pl_PL.utf8

I haven't tried setting locale - i don't know where i should set it.
