Slackware 10.1 on Dell inspiron 300M

Hello,everyone!

I have just installed slackware 10.1 on my laptop. However,Windows X cannot be started.

I installed it with GNOME and KDE.When it boots, the default mode is multiuser mode=3.So,I typed "startx" to use Windows X.All of a sudden, the Windows X cannot be started and appears in Black screen with some strange color. It just hangs there and cannot be restarted by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Yeah,by the way, what information should I provide if it is the clue for this problem? Please advise.

You need to use the 855 patch for the display driver, I had the same problem with my cousins laptop.

First off,thanks for your reply,AxeZ & almahdi.

AxeZ,I've configured my X with your command. But it asks me tons of questions and I couldn't answer them correctly and the X still not working.

almahdi,by the way,how can you patch the display driver? Please give details.

Thanks you guys.

http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html

You need to use the wrapper, and add it to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local

so that every boot, it should load the wrapper.

Thanks.almahdi.

I have seen the website which you provided but it dealt with the resolution. My problem is that it even won't boot to graphical interface!

Furthermore,is it a good idea to compile a new kernel?Maybe a new kernel will support the graphic card.

Please advice.
