Slackware's Default FTP Questions

I am using xfce desktop and terminal.

1) How do i check to see what is the default FTP Client used by Slackware12.2 when i type:
$ftp
2) How do i get ftp to download large files? > 2gb from ftp server elektroni.phys.tut.fi or any ftp server.

Thanks

1) It IS 'ftp' (that's what its name is)
2) You can use any ftp (my favourite one is lftp) client, wget or rsync.

If you are talking about slackware iso images, the best way would probably be 'wget' (the best way here = I do it this way, haha)

wget -c ftp_address_pointing_to_the_file

$man ftp

If you can't figure that out just use gftp.

$gftp

My Question is, is it Very Secure FTP or ProFTP installed as default, so i can find the corresponding .conf files to set the accepted "File Download Size"

man ftp provides BSD Command manual. FTP just signifies File Transfer Protocol to me. First thing i did was
$man ftp
Googled What is Default Ftp installed in slackware12.2 is too!
Slackware has quite of few of FTP Programs. *Ok let me try this Question "how do I configure FTP to allow me to download large files: > 2GB?

Correct. AFAIK, It's also the name of the default ftp client in linux.
So the ftp clients are eg. ftp, lftp, vsftp (edit: it's a server, not a client, my bad), gftp, etc.

man ftp gave you the correct man page.

FTP (client, not the protocol) is an ftp client that you'll find on most (if not all) linux distributions. It's quite old and there are better ones. Try lftp or one that you mentioned.

It will be neither one unless you uncomment a line in /etc/inetd.conf.

Code:
#
# These are standard services:
#
# Very Secure File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server.
#ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd vsftpd
#
# Professional File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server.
#ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd proftpd
#
If you've installed both packages, the line you uncomment is the server that you'll use.

Vsftp and proftp aren't clients. Those are the servers.

I think the question was about ftp clients not servers. sycamorex is puzzled now

I think what he is asking is how to change download limits for the standard ftp client and I may be wrong but I don't think there is a download limit.

If there is a file size limit it is probably server side.

Ok..thank you for clarifying the FTP reference usage. Sycamorex; correct its the FTP client I am interested for desktop usage. revoemag; File size limit is the issue. I downloaded 2GB of 4+GB
and when i:
Code:
$ reget filename
I received:
Code:
local: slackware64-13.1-install-dvd.iso: File too large
426 Failure writing network stream.
Don't want to setup ftp server on this desktop box. Thank you so much!

From that sentence, it appeared that the OP wanted to know about the server installation.

I don't know how to resolve this issue of ftp limitations. However, if it's just a question of downloading an iso image, try wget:

Code:
wget -c ftp://elektroni.phys.tut.fi/slackware64-13.1-iso/slackware64-13.1-install-dvd.iso

It is not a configuration problem, it is a limitation of the data type used internally in the 'ftp' client and there is no fix that I know of for the older client (unless you want to modify the source).

My fix for that is to use wget or sftp. In fact I have pretty much developed the habit of using sftp instead of ftp, but old habits die hard.

Richard, you are right the sentence reflects my confusion about the naming convention of FTP program which sycamorex explained to my edification. Anyhow thank you all... The issue has been resolved by using "lftp" client. It was a "limitation of the data type used internally in the 'ftp' client" as astrogeek and sycamorex pointed out.
Thank you all so much!
