Slackwar64 14.2 no sound even when pavucontrol' vumeter show signal movement.
Hi everybody! Its me, again.
Well, I recently installed slackware64 14.2 trying to figure it out an Nvidia issue, It was solved thanks for asking, but now, after somedays of running the system I got and audio issue... the system just gots mute. No sound, no music.
I put an screenshot here, where pavucontrol show the signal of mpv video.
Looks like is playing but I can hear a thing.
I dont know about the topic, I "googled" a bit but I cant got any solution.. then I came her for any help.
Toggle off automute in alsamixer. Make sure the right device is enabled in the configuration tab of pavucontrol. If the hdmi audio device from the nvidia card is enabled and you are not trying to use hdmi audio that could be the issue

Done.
1.I toggle off automute.
2.I checked/tried everyone of devices in pavucontrol configuration.
Try using xwmconfig to set your system to launch fluxbox, and try launching mpv in fluxbox to eliminate any possible wonkiness in your addon openbox implementation.

Even before I post something here I tried that with xfce4...but anyway.. I just did again with fluxbox and twm.
I got the same. I tried with a youtube video in case it was a mpv issue.
delete /tmp/pulse* ~/.config/pulse and reboot to nuke all the files pulse created when it was first started. It will recreate them when it restarts. May help.
When PC audio fails, especially when the software shows activity, the first thing to do is to start a process of elimination. The first step is to eliminate hardware issues, even a bad cable or knocked loose connector, or even one in the wrong jack can all cause audio silence. It would help if you described your signal chain but for the sake of speed I'll assume it's the typical line out to powered speakers. If it is, remove the plug from the PC's sound card jack and crank the volume up a few numbers. Touch the tip of the plug with a finger and if hardware external to your PC is working you will hear a buzz everytime you touch the tip. You may have to advance the speakers volume control, the hardware volume control on the powered speakers, not the software volume controls on your screen, to get an audible buzz. If there's no buzz, the problem is not inside your PC. If there is an audible buzz then we move to software.
I suggest copying a system notification sound in .wav format to a location you can find and type easily. There are several in "/usr/share/sounds". I'll assume for illustration we are using test.wav copied to $HOME. Use "aplay" and "speaker-test" from a terminal and post the output here. Here's some examples ... https://www.systutorials.com/docs/li...-speaker-test/

The pc its an Asus laptop (X555UB), the sound is produce by laptop speakers.(no conections, all built-in)
I decided to reinstall slackware. (..again), then the issue just got aparently solved. Then I started to install my usual apps, after a reboot... guess what, no sound... again.
I thinks is not a hardware issue because in the windows system (other partition) It just works.
Looks like I get the issue when I install some applications (helm?, jack?, ardour6?) but I dont know for sure.
Anyway Im still in the "process of elimination"...
PD: I even create a new user to be sure about any configuration file. got same result.

update:
I tried with a bluetooth speaker, no sound either.
I'm curious what driver you are using for audio on that laptop. I seem to recall some issues because it is proprietary... called SonicMaster or something like that.
I had à sound problem since january iirc on current. Tried lot of things and ultimately found that pulseaudio wasn't loadind my card's modules anymore.
If you think it might help I could look for the commanda I used and post it here.
Yerterday, after I left the post here. I suspend the pc. -no sound registered at that time.-
Code:
slock & pm-suspend
Then, this morning when I play some video file, the sound was ok. o_O..So strange.
Note: jack, pavucontrol, helm, the bluetooth speaker.. anything was just ok.
Anyway I left some information here, because I dont know why or when its gonna swap to mute again. ()
(I feel like Hercules Poirot or something jeje)
