Slack-Current-01 - HP Device Manager

Hi, I'm unable to get the HP Device Manager working on this vertion.
Slack-Current-01 - Slack 12.rc1
Dev --> HP C4180 All In One
The printer works with KDE & the scanner works with Kooka.
During the installation of Slack there was no option to run HPLIP at startup as in Slack 12.

After the install I ran:
slackpkg update
slackpkg upgrade all
When I did the upgrade I noticed a "cups" upgrade.
I thought that may be the problem so I snatched the original cups from the install disk and re-installed the original cups to the system.
Still nothing.

Could someone give me the path to the setting that I need to tinker with, or tell me if it's even do-able with this distro.
Thanks.

Read and follow the CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT file for Slackware-current:
Quote:
HPLIP no longer requires daemons to be started at boot time, so any
/etc/rc.d/rc.hplip script should be removed.

There is a minor problem with the HPLIP and CUPS versions in -current;
hp-toolbox will not work unless LC_ALL is set to a UTF8 locale.
An easy workaround is to start it with "LC_ALL=$LANG.UTF8 hp-toolbox" if
you're not using a UTF8 locale. Also, your user account must be a member
of the "lp" group for hp-toolbox to work properly, and to use the scanner
portion of some (all?) HP print/scan/copy units, you'll need to be a member
of the "lp" group. This is due to the fact that hplip's udev rules set
the device with group "lp" ownership.
HP Device Manager works fine here.

Bruce Hill:
Thanks!!
I guess I should have read up on Current before I started squawkin'.
I did a re-install just to get rid of whatever I may have screwed up messing with cups.

Thanks again,
slackass.

I'm still trying to get used to -current having a CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT file.

Well, I kind of like the CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT file, but whatever. My first foray into -current was successful because of it and UPGRADE.TXT, without any additional reading required. Simplicity at its finest. (But I have never upgraded to -current before the presence of CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT, if such a time existed, so I guess I don't have to get used to it)

I've been unable to find this file. ---> "LC_ALL" or "LC_ALL=$LANG.UTF8 hp-toolbox"
I googled it and can't seem to locate it in the manual.
CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT file tells me about it but not "where" it iz.
Or is this a command I need to issue?
A little hint please.
Thanks,
slackass

The file in Slackware where you set the language locale is /etc/profile.d/lang.sh.

What you are supposed to do is issue "LC_ALL=$LANG.UTF8 hp-toolbox" in a terminal
if you don't have a UTF-8 (notice the hyphen) in /etc/profile.d/lang.sh, such as:
Code:
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8

Thanks again Bruce Hill!
The location is what I needed.
Now I have something to fool around with.
I just started using Slack 12 a few months ago and still have a lot to learn.
I stuck Current-01 in another partition just to fool around with.
I aint fixed inuthin' yet but I'm learnin'. ... :-)
