I have searched the net a lot to find a good tutorial on how to run my own server from my PC, but I couldn't find anything which goes in good detail about running servers and how to set them properly. I am pretty sure that many people use that kind of service so if it is possible for someone to post a good up to date tutorial me and many others will be very great full. The purpose of the server for me is to have my own website and to be able to experiment with php and if possible to be able to access my computer from other computers.

Thank you
You generally have to find information on setting up each individual service. I.E. an Apache tutorial, a PHP tutorial, etc. You can find some good information by searching for LAMP (Linux, Apache, PHP, MySQL) also.
Your chosen method of firewall setup, network information, and security will be by each of your chosen tools.
If you are playing do the best you can and check your logs.
If it is "real site", good luck.
actually there is one on www.bit-tech.net that revolves around unbuntu but it was not much different than slackware. it has a tutroial for FTP, HTTP, and Mail (i think mail not sure though it has been a while) and that is what i used to set up my server (FTP).
Before you get started (unless this will be a local server not accessible from the internet), you should make sure your ISP allows running a server. A lot of ISPs will simply shut off your internet access if they detect a server (they often scan normalish ports looking for such things). You can of course circumvent this by running the server on a very high port that the ISP is unlikely to detect (they often only check common server ports), but this is probably against the terms of service and could get your internet service deactivated if discovered (plus, they will see a lot of uploading activity and may become suspicious). I have always wanted to run a server, but, although I haven't checked my ISP, I am almost positive they don't allow it (and since my ISP is a branch of a monopolist company that doesn't care about its users, I don't think promising them low bandwidth usage would do the trick).
