Lightest way that I can think of:
Code:
strings myfile.doc | less

http://wvware.sourceforge.net/

I read the question as asking for a program that can read Microsoft Word .doc files. I assumed that the reference to xpdf was an analogy not a request for help with PDF files as such.

I personally use OpenOffice 4.1.12 binaries[1] downloaded from www.openoffice.org and converted to SBos using rpm2tgz. I find that OpenOffice can work well on quite low spec machines from Slackware 14.0 onward. There may be security issues with Apache OpenOffice.

LibreOffice from Alien Bob's repo might be a better although heavier option [2]. And Antiword from slackbuilds [3] could be a super-light text only alternative if you really wanted just .doc files and not .docx or the more recent formats. Finally, Google Docs[4] might be a choice if you only need to read Word files now and again.

1 - http://www.openoffice.org/

2 - http://slackware.uk/people/alien/sla...s/libreoffice/

3 - http://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0/office/antiword/

4 - https://docs.google.com - you will need a Google account

If it is just extracting the text from a word document then strings will work to some extent as mentioned by another poster.

Yes but that don't remove all the "garbage" code in the file..
I've compiled last WE abiword (SBo) and looks great for reading .doc
Will take also a look to antiword and catdoc, thanks for your posts
