I read the question as asking for a program that can read Microsoft Word .doc files. I assumed that the reference to xpdf was an
analogy not a request for help with PDF files as such.
I personally use OpenOffice 4.1.12 binaries[1] downloaded from
www.openoffice.org and converted to SBos using rpm2tgz. I find that OpenOffice can work well on quite low spec machines from Slackware 14.0 onward. There may be security issues with Apache OpenOffice.
LibreOffice from Alien Bob's repo might be a better although heavier option [2]. And Antiword from slackbuilds [3] could be a super-light text only alternative if you really wanted
just .doc files and not .docx or the more recent formats. Finally, Google Docs[4] might be a choice if you only need to read Word files now and again.

If it is just extracting the text from a word document then strings will work to some extent as mentioned by another poster.
