route: difference between * and 0.0.0.0

What is the difference between * and 0.0.0.0 when looking at netstat -r?

How do I configure for each?

So * means there is no route.

0.0.0.0 means to use the default gateway router.

route add default gw will change a * to 0.0.0.0

I assume, but did not test, that route del default gw will change the 0.0.0.0 back to *

If anyone can supplement this, it is appreciated. I just thought I would share what I dug out after the mental block disappeared.

I don't have netstat installed I do have ss. They are similar.
I am also not sure what you are wanting.

Code:
ss -tunar
Netid  State   Recv-Q  Send-Q    Local Address:Port      Peer Address:Port  Process
tcp    LISTEN  0       128             0.0.0.0:22             0.0.0.0:*
tcp    ESTAB   0       0                xyzpdq:45386     104.24.137.8:443
tcp    LISTEN  0       128                [::]:22                [::]:*
What part are you asking about?
