I've been playing around with lilo settings (placing the menu, etc) and have been rebooting alot to get it aligned properly with my image, wanted to speed it up the boot process a little so added some ampersands to this section of /etc/rc.d/rc.M :
Code:
# These GTK+/pango files need to be kept up to date for
# proper input method, pixbuf loaders, and font support.
if [ -x /usr/bin/update-gtk-immodules ]; then
/usr/bin/update-gtk-immodules --verbose &
fi
if [ -x /usr/bin/update-gdk-pixbuf-loaders ]; then
/usr/bin/update-gdk-pixbuf-loaders --verbose &
fi
if [ -x /usr/bin/update-pango-querymodules ]; then
/usr/bin/update-pango-querymodules --verbose &
fi
I'm wondering what are the effects of this other than a faster boot, will it ever cause problems?
(I'm typing from a cell phone so excuse my brevity) do a search in the forum for that update-* stuff you commented out: Pat himself answered on the matter

I've searched it and I don't see the thread you are referring to. In my rc.M I have them commented out, and it works ok. Surely putting an "&" will also work.
If your boot is faster, it won't be by much. I've moved all those lines into a separate script, which runs in the daily cron (I think 4:00 am). Moving them out does result in a faster boot.

Yes, i had previously done that where they ran one after the other in the daily cron until i noticed they never ran (computer was usually off at 4am lol).
I was curious whether running those 3 commands at the "same time" would cause problems.
