In slack, is rc.modules equivalent to /etc/modules.conf? So if I wanted modules loaded at boot, can I put it in rc.modules? Thanks.

modules.conf tells the "automagic" module loader what to do when certain
devices are statted. rc.modules always loads the modules at boot time.
So, yes you can put /sbin/modprobe module_name in rc.modules and expect it to be loaded at boot time.

For your network card I would put into /etc/modules.conf

alias eth0 3c59x

or whatever the name of the module is leaving off the extension
