Openvpn uses /dev/tun0, and /dev/tap is also a networt device. I know there's no eth0, but just about all physical all other physical have device nodes.

I missed that bit on the passwords. I eventually found these IKEv2 passwords on some instructions page from the linux-cli-community github site, and got going. The one extra gotcha was that the 'protonvpn configure' dialogues only wrote my username to ~/.pvpn-cli/pvpnpass. So the thing kept stopping and requesting a password. It failed in scripts. I got the idea of trying the password as line 2 and that sorted it.
