Problem upgrading to Xfree 4.2.0

Howdy

I upgraded to slack 8.1 about a month ago, and things have been great, for the most part.

The only problem is with X. I fdisked and did a clean install. I ran xf86config and entered the exact same variables that I did under 8.0 and the older version of Xfree. Upon typing "startx," the machine freezes solid. There are no clues that I can find anywhere in /var/logs that might tell me what is going on. I'm now using the x packages from 8.0 with 8.1 with no problem. My only worry now is that I won't be able to do this if/when I upgrade to 9.0 due to likely incompatibilities. My card is a generic trident TGUI9680.

any ideas?

TIA

Hmmm....

You could try my personal favorite way to configure X:

As root run the following:

/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -configure

This will detect all hardware that it can and then create a clean XF86Config.new file in /root/ You can then test it with the following command:

/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new

You should get the test screen. You can then add whatever tweaks you like to the file. When satisfied, move it to /etc/X11/XF86Config

j.
