I compiled ALSA as a module, included OSS emulation. I ran alsaconf, the AC97 onboard is found, alsamixer - ok. All the snd modules are loaded. The problem is that I have
/dev/dsp
missing, which means that I cant use OSS emulation. I think the compilation wiped out my /dev/dsp*.
Which options should I choose in the ALSA configuration section in the kernel so I dont get /dev/dsp* missing and have OSS emulation working?
And what generates the /dev/dsp* devices?
Thanks!
I have fresh 10.1 install

well, after typing lsmod i see that all necessary modules are loaded, i recompiled the kernel and put the ALSA in, not as module. But still i get /dev/dsp* missing which are used by OSS. I dont know what to do to have /dev/dsp*.
Including snd-pcm-oss, snd-mixer-oss and snd-seq-oss? Without these modules loaded, udev does not create device nodes for the OSS emulation components.
This is what I get before and after starting the X server.
/dev/dsp* and /dev/mixer* are still missing.
And this is my modprobe.conf
Code:
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.8 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

I would check /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa that is responsible for sound stuff settings.
If hotplug/udev do not create the necessary device nodes try creating them manually editing your /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
Make sure major/minor numbers of those devices are created according to lanana assignements.
Hope this helps
