Open acknowledgement of appreciation to Slackware Team.

Hi,

I am responding with a new thread because of this;

I mean, half the people in this thread take it as set in stone that Slackware will implement systemd and that everybody will abandon Slackware if that happens. Why bother spending most of my free time on Slackware if all I see is people threatening to leave the distro to rot instead of trusting the Slackware team to do the right thing?

I am going to unsubscribe from this cesspit of a thread right after hitting ENTER.
I have read through The mass exodus if Slackware uses Systemd and found Alien_Bob's reply concerning that thread above. I use Slackware and have been since PV's first release. Dedication by members of the Slackware team is unfounded and sometimes not always appreciated nor understood by all. The mass exodus of Slackware by quasi-users does not represent the true Slackware user base. I can see how Eric can become discouraged by respondents of that thread. In no way do they represent me nor my support of Slackware.

Eric, my apologies if you were offended by the remarks of a few. But your work is appreciated for providing everything you do for Slackware users. The few slackers that did attempt to represent true feelings for the discussion from a Slackers perspective were few. I really did not respond myself because I know I would be stepping into a big pile without my boots on. There will not be a mass exodus of true Slackware users because most do know that the team will provide a true UNIX-like Gnu/Linux that is stable and will remain so.

Keep up the great work you & the team provide to the Slackware user base. Much appreciated!
Enough said!

have a look at the end of this blog post
alien.slackbook.org/blog/handbrake-lost-for-slackware/

no wounder that Eric feels sometimes a bit tired,
I think the amount of work he does for Slackware, next to his job, is unbelievable high.

multilib, kde, flash, libre office, jdk and all other, often nearly in realtime to the releases...

that he retires or take a longer break/holiday is one of my biggest concerns, because this would relay mean a big loss.
(I do not know much about other Slackware devs, they have no blog, or I do not know them,
so I do not know how high is the bus factor for these people, including Pat, but sometimes I think about them also and wish them a good health)

however, to stay more on topic
if a 'thank you' helps to support the work of you all, beside donations, here is a big on:
THANK YOU

+1 for appreciating Eric's great work on Slackware. It's ironic that while personally I wouldn't mind if Patrick implemented systemd in one of the next releases for some reasons (because he would probably do it right), I do mind the absence of PAM, since this is a showstopper for some software I'd like to use. So I don't "jump ship", I just react in a pragmatic manner, which is dedicating most of my free time to working out some solutions on a different distribution. Here's a mini-exodus.

As I see things, I'll gladly come back to Slackware once it enables me to use some stuff that's I'd really like to be able to offer to my clients. I don't "leave Slackware to rot", I just have to use a tool that's more appropriate for the job. Slackware could be this tool, only it has its own reasons for not wanting to be that tool. Which is a bit sad.

Cheers,

Niki

I have to agree, Slackware is one of the best most stable and oldest Distro of linux out there. I as a 20 year user of Slackware and appreciate everything Pat and the rest of the Slackware team have done over the years to make this the best distro in the history of Linux. If people want to leave over this, they never were true Slackware users in the first place. Screw 'em.

Thanks Alien Bob and Pat and everyone else involved in the work of maintaining Slackware, you guys are the greatest.

I'm an ex slacker, at least on the desktop and have not been without my own personal criticism of it. But I still say that it is a great distribution and the guys that work on it and deliver it are to be congratulated. I'm not one to gush over PV like others on here, but do appreciate the hard work that he puts in, as well as that by all the contributors.
So I say to all those who constantly say that they will leave. Stop mouthing off about it just do it.

Yes, many thanks to the Slackware team. They've always made the right decisions, I'm confident they will continue to do so, and I have no desire to leave Slackware for another distro.

Long time Slackware user here. I agree totally with the original poster. Patrick, Eric and other contributors do a fantastic job. I for one trust them to do the right thing when it comes to systemd, pam etc. I will not be leaving in a hurry. Been there, done that and have seen that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

That's not grass on the other side - it's weeds.

If I listed names I would neglect someone...

If I tried to express the proper level of thanks and acknowledgment due, every supported expression in unicode would not suffice...

So I can only add a simple, but sincere "Thank you all!"
