Almost definitely due to the compositor, screenshot:
Where's my screenshot? Tried uploading it 3 times now!!! 4th time lucky.
Anyway, the error message popup is in (KDE)System Settings > Display and Monitor > Compositor
says use XRender instead of OpenGL.

Reason: Finally loaded screenshot. Too big before?
I've been down with covid for the last two weeks, so my computer has been idling for long periods. I am occasionally getting freezes that only seem to happen when I have XscreenSaver running. I am able to kill X, but I don't get a usable terminal and then I am forced to soft reboot. Not sure if this is related to the kernel or with the nvidia driver. I am using an ancient GT 640 video card until my 3060 ti arrives next week. Checking the X.org log I do see some nvidia driver related errors but I didnt' save the log and lost it. If it happens again I will post the log results.
With 5.10.4 I just stopped using Firefox and I didn't have any problems since, with one exception: the problem still appears if I let the system to enter standby state.
I've just upgraded the system and I was wondering what to expect, has anyone experienced screen freeze with the new kernel (5.10.5)?

Hi Daedra. I am really sorry to hear about you having COVID-19. I sure hope you can shake it off.

Thank you sir, the worst of it is behind me. The first 5 days were excruciating, but I didn't have to go to the hospital so I count myself lucky. I'm on day 16 now and am still weak, but I should be fully recovered in a week or two.

Best wishes for getting well. Wrt the Nvidia driver, I have observed occasional kernel messages and loss of UI for a long time, particularly in suspend/resume and long screensaver idle situations. I blame it on the Nvidia kernel module. (Usually ssh still works.)
Oh, and who did you have to bribe to get an RTX 3000 card?

A guy on youtube named Falcodrin is using someones script off github to parse Zen 3 and RTX 3000 stock in real time. Yesterday in the comments someone mentioned walmart had the EVGA 3060 ti XC in stock, I clicked on his link and sure enough it was there. Managed to get it for $409, I was just quick on the draw because it sold out in less than a minute. I really wanted a 3080, but in these covid times I decided to take would I could get.

Tsk. In Europe where I am it goes for EUR 700 which is over USD 800... I just say no. the 3080 has reached EUR 1500... almost makes the 3090 a good buy at EUR 1680. On the other hand you could feed a small third world country for that amount of money.

I upgraded to kernel 5.10.5 this morning before going to work. Opened a few windows, (no firefox), played a couple of VLC clips, a few more windows across screens and... crash!
Back to Xrender.

I don't think the nvidia driver/kernel changed overnight; so, i put my money on the way the OpenGL is handled by the kernel.
I doubt nvidia will do anything about it so, i guess, the OpenGL developers will have to step in and find a work-around to this problem

My laptop is Intel video. I have a desktop that I was going to upgrade to -current that has an nvidia card. Perhaps I need to wait a bit. It is not a modern card by any mean. It uses the 390.xx driver series.

To make matters worse, the entire 3000 series is about to go up in price because of tariff's and scarcity of materials. Asus already officially announced the price hike coming.
Regarding my previous post #16, well it seems fixed now, had no lockups since 4.14.213
On 4.14.212 it was still freezing X at random times, with no firefox installed, sometimes even froze on XDM login screen.
Tested 4.14.213 used it normally for couple of hours, left it idle for 6 hours and it just didn't happen anymore.
Hopefully it's been fixed upstream, I've upgraded to 4.14.214 now and it's still solid but YmmV I guess.
