There is an option you can use that will create the nvidia-installer directory and exit. The readme files inside the directory will probably answer all of your questions. After the installation, there is also documentation installed including a common question/answer section. If I remember correctly, there is a nvidia.ko module installed as well as a glx.o module.
If you boot up from one of multiple kernels, then you need to re-run the installation for each kernel. There is an option you can use so you don't need to actually boot into the other kernels to install their nvidia modules.
