NVIDIA drivers, Slackware -current, nouveau still loading?
I recently installed Slackware 15.0 only to update it to -current along with multilib. after doing so I was able to run X using the built-in nouveau drivers for a little bit, but still buggy so I went back to the tried and true binaries by NVIDIA that I've had for all of 14.2, but version 510.54 of course. installation went without a hitch followed by installing the package to blacklist nouveau through /etc/modprobe.d, however now when I run X it's only using one of my two connected monitors and giving me a very low resolution. looking over the X log I see no mention of the NVIDIA binaries and it looks like nouveau is still loading? am I missing something somewhere? lspci shows the NVIDIA card present, but lsmod shows nothing related to NVIDIA or nouveau (rightfully so). the log however shows otherwise, help!

damn, sorry for this entire post! Assumed previous versions of the NVIDIA binaries had worked for my video card without reading/realizing that it is no longer supported by the 510 branch! I had jumped straight to this version using the SBO scripts to build so it never mentioned my GPU was no longer supported. I found this out when I decided to give the NVIDIA installer a try and sure enough, I need to go for the lower version... Unfortunately can't delete, so it'll remain here for my shame.

I tend to just use the nvidia installer itself, but I also tend to keep a few older versions just in case, since I am sure support for GT710 is about to be if not already on the chopping block per NVIDIA if I am not mistaken and so far the 470.103.01 works just fine in 15.0. I just have a crap MSI GT710 - but thats fine for me, I don't do heavy gaming - nor do I do any video editing/encoding - it offers basic 2d/3d acceleration and video playback support - so thats all I need anyways.
Distribution: Slackware64-current with "True Multilib" and KDE4Town.

Yes, the 470 series has been moved to "legacy." It should be added to the list of legacy drivers in the near future. The 470.103.01 driver will build with the 5.17.0 kernel (I'm running it "as we speak").
Nvidia does have a method of determining the correct driver for each one of their cards. It can be found at, https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Reason: Typo.

Well I will certainly be on the look out then, and try to hold on to dear life the very last supported driver and hope it will build for kernel versions down the line.. The 5.x series at least, and given that 15.0 is out, and 15.1 most likely won't take as long, it is like it will still be the 5.x branch. I mean if I have to then I will look for the next GPU to buy that is low enough but supported by NVIDIA , only because this is how much little faith I have in terms of nouveau, and I really do not need that much of a powerful GPU ... Of course I will and should look into ATI too then, to keep my options open.
I just need something above onboard graphics - thats all. I mean sure I could just as well fall back on that, but I do not feel like giving up some of my RAM for that however.
I would like to point out that this is not 100% accurate. For example it list my card (GeForce GT 730) as supported with the 470.103.01 driver.
However my particular card is not supported by this driver and requires the 390.147 driver.
Two ways to tell if supported. One, try installing the driver, it will let you know. This is how I discovered my card was relegated to legacy, quit a while ago I might add.
The second is to determine your cards chip ID. Mine is 10de:0f02. From Additional Information on that page click on the README, down the page select "II. Appendices", then search the page for the last 4 of your chip ID, in my case 0f02, it is listed under this sentence. "Below are the legacy GPUs that are no longer supported in the unified driver. These GPUs will continue to be maintained through the special legacy NVIDIA GPU driver releases." On this page you will call also find out what driver supports your card. My card is listed under this sentence. "The 390.xx driver supports the following set of GPUs:"
In Linux, I've found that the best driver isn't always the one at the top of nvidia's search and find list. There are far too many variables in Linux what with kernel and gcc version and that's just the beginning. I have an old Thinkpad with a Quadro FX 570M that will effectively use drivers newer than the ones either nvidia or Lenovo recommends. A secondary box has an old GT-640 that was found to thrive on much newer drivers than the older ones nvidia recommends*. OTOH my main box with a GTX 1070 Ti produces nasty artifacts in some applications with recommended drivers newer that 470x. This discrepancy is why I always use the .run installer from runlevel 3 and then test it. That just works best for me.
* I discovered this by swapping cards before I changed drivers and was surprised when I realized much later the GT-640 was continuing to run great on the newer driver that had been installed for a GT-760. They aren't even the same architecture.
