hi friend
me too had some probelms when i try compiling a new kernel from make oldconfig,
ie using 2.4 config to 2.6 after that i just took a fresh compiling then it worked
hope this thread relates to that
http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/fa.../cache/92.html
it is nice that u could get into machine using old kernel linux-old
if not use slax live cd.... and chroot into ur root

so better start fresh (dont do oldconf)
copy source to ur home dir (create a dir called build as i do, so u need not su to run xconfig )
You should CD to your linux-2.6.14/ directory, then issue:
$ make xconfig (or make gconfig make your changes then save the file)
$ make
then su to root and
# cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.14 ; ln -sf /boot/System.map-2.6.14 /boot/System.map
# make modules_install
# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.14 (kernel name)
# lilo (dont forgot to run lilo each time)
# reboot
this is the part of frame buffer in my .config

# Console display driver support
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_MDA_CONSOLE is not set
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FONTS=y
# CONFIG_FONT_8x8 is not set
CONFIG_FONT_8x16=y

please enable correct graphics support
#
# Graphics support
#
CONFIG_FB=y
..... this is needed
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT=y

luck my friend try try do urself many time
first try enabling most of the things
first time go through the things (i use $ make gconfig)

cannot allocate resources region 8 of bridge 2.6.14 kernel 0000:00:1e.0
cannot allocate resources region 9 of bridge 2.6.14 kernel 0000:00:1e.0

no i didnt have it, i managed getting the kernel working by adding:
Code:
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_MDA_CONSOLE is not set
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FONTS=y
# CONFIG_FONT_8x8 is not set
CONFIG_FONT_8x16=y
but it crashes on some point.... i did google it but i couldnt find any, i even did some search in here but nothing....u think i should install 2.6.13

no man

download a fresh copy of kernel.tar file (me uses 2.6.12.3) as i said create a dir in ur home /home/xxx/build (this has many advantages)

xtract things in that /build/linux-2.6.14
cd to that (home/rkrishna/build/linux-2.6.12.3$ )
do as i said in the earlier thread

enable most of the things in the kernel later u could change things if u needed.

enable support to file system (it is needed other wise it will show kernel panic )
frame buffer, (i have intel board all drivers are ther in the new kernel)

u must put "tick" for built in and . for module (in make xconfig)
Quote:
when i edit the .config file
i am not an expert to comment on this

dont forgot ot run lilo

best of luck (me to suffered a little atlast i succeded)

ok i will give it a try

Q: the mkdir that am going to create does it have to be in the root/home/build/linux-2.6.14 or under any users account, am concerned about the permission?

Q:when you say enable everything, you mean just to check all the boxes from the xconfig?

you can put vga in the lilo boot prompt ... eg: Lilo: Linux vga=normal

Quote:
so....? whats does that mean, what am i suppose to do now, recomplie?
Yeah, recompile. This is something that you have to keep in mind, its very hard to get a 100% working kernel in the first compile... maybe you still are going to recompile it some "n" times.... only when you keep the old configs from a working kernel you can have a 99% that it will going to work...

what video card do you have? Have you selected the framebuffer option on the kernel ? Did you choose any special driver for your framebuffer that have to do with your videocard? If you do, unselect it and only choose the vga driver it will be enough to handle with the framebuffer...

I have put a little how to about frame buffer on the forum:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...t=blank+screen

If framebuffer is your problem this may help you, if dont you have to recompile looking for every option... or try starting from the old config file and un/selecting only the thing you want....

ok i will recompile, though i think the error that i get now has nothing to do with my vga, the vga was my first problem after installing the new kernel, but that was fixed by adding couple of a new lines in my config file, the error that i get now is this
Code:
cannot allocate resources region 7 of bridge 2.6.14 kernel 0000:00:1e.0
cannot allocate resources region 8 of bridge 2.6.14 kernel 0000:00:1e.0
cannot allocate resources region 9 of bridge 2.6.14 kernel 0000:00:1e.0
and then the system crashes, at least can some tell me this error stands for what, does it belong to my newtwork devices? so i can know what to check and uncheck on my xconfig.

You should not edit the .config file by hand, instead use make xconfig or
make menuconfig.

Why ? Because make *config treat all kernel features dependancies for you and
they know .config syntax better than you, the make *config utilities are meant to
assist you for kernel configuration

How did you install the kernel after you compile it ? Do you run :
- make modules_install
- cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-$VERSION.$PATCHLEVEL.$SUBLEVEL
(eg : cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.14)
- edit lilo.conf and add entry for vmlinuz-X.X.X and run lilo to update the change

u havve to login in ur id only not root (it is safer)

Q:when you say enable everything,
no no what ever u feel to b enabled.
so that nothing is missed, even make some of them as modules, it worked for me

i think as egag said, try kernel2.6.12..
(egag and keefaz are giants in this field)
