no /usr/src/linux dir ??!!

Installed Slackware 9.0 last night and got a decent install, but still need to get network configured so I can download grub and nvidia geForce4 drivers. In tracking down the problem I saw in dmesg that my kernel doesn't support hi mem, so I thought I'd recompile using DaOne's excellent resource on this forum (thanks DaOne). Only to discover:

I don't have a /usr/src/linux directory!

????

Used bare.i during install. Skipped LILO and the network card probe (locks up my system) during install, but otherwise followed default selections.

How can I recompile the kernel? Any advice?

I'll call myself pre-newbie since I've only been at this a week or two.

THANKS.

install the kernel source. i assume there is a slack package for it, and once installed that's where it will be.

Excellent advice, Chris. Thanks.

So here comes the newbie part: just how do I do that?

THANKS.

Oops. Never mind. STFW Newbie!

No sources on the slackware cd (unless I really don't know what I'm doing!) So I'll have to download. Back to the networking issues....

Thanks anyways

You install a Slackware package with (as root):

installpkg pkgname.tgz

remove:
removepkg pkgname.tgz

upgrade:
upgradepkg pkgname.tgz

See a pattern: man pkgtool , man installpkg, man removepkg

Search the forums. People ask for where the kernel source is 3 times a day.

Package here: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/slackwar...0-noarch-5.tgz

Looks like we were posting at the same time, contrasutra.

Learned my lesson about searching the web first. Thanks for the assistance, nevertheless.
