If the driver for your sound card doesn't support timer-based scheduling, you can reduce the default latency of pulseaudio (which is quite high at 100ms in Slackware by default) by editing lines 87 & 88 in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf. For example, this will change the default latency to 10ms:

You then have to restart pulseaudio for the setting to take effect by killing the process using pulseaudio -k. The process should automatically restart itself.
If 10ms causes crackling, perhaps try 20ms:
