no sound in slack 10

dear all,

i've just installed Slackware 10, and I wanna adjust the volume using the alsaconf, which run fine. But when I wanna set the mixer (using alsamixer) it said that "no mixer elems found".
How to solve this?? My sound card is intel 810-based chipset.

If you have both snd-intel8x0m and snd_intel8x0 modules active, then that could be the same as the problem I had. I added snd-intel8x0m to the /etc/hotplug/blacklist file, then it worked for me. I read this from a slackware forum somewhere, something about the 8x0m driver being a modem driver, and the mixer is trying to control this device instead of the sound device.

I'm a newbie so forgive any me of any posting faux pax's...

I found a solution for my problem with sound. I have a new install of Slackware 10 on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop.

After fighting for a week with this problem and trying umpteen suggestions, I finally found this post:

http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/modules...c=7796&forum=1

In a nutshell, here is his solution:

chmod a+rwx /dev/dsp*

It worked for me. Sound is present under root and my user. I hope this works for you.

All users who wish audio capabilities are supposed to be members of the audio group in /etc/group

And the /dev/dsp is supposed to be owned by root and the audio group, no need to change permissions.
