no display after exiting out of xorg - slackware 13.37

I just installed slackware 13.37 with 3.1 kernel. I had to install a driver from nvidia for my card (Quadro FX 3400/4400) because xorg was locking up with kde.

Xorg/kde looks & works great but when I exit out, I get a black screen with no text. I can type commands (and not see them) and have them work. Startx, for example, will plop me right back into xorg. If I reboot and use fvwm2 instead of kde, no problems.

Nothing in Xorg.0.log or messages.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem on slack-current with the default kernel and binary drivers on my Dell Latitude laptop with Quadro card. It's been happening since I first set things up a year or two ago with the binary drivers, so it's nothing new. My desktops with Geforce 6800GT and 8800GT and binary drivers work without this issue. The terminal will work fine on boot, this problem is only when quitting X. I have not tried with non-KDE environments, so I cannot comment, and I can't give exact versions of software at the moment.

Are you having the problem on a notebook or on a desktop?

Incidentally, I've had a similar issue on wake-from-suspend on the same notebook, where about 2/3 of the time the screen will be blank on wake. Switching virtual terminals with ctrl-alt-f1 and then back with ctrl-alt-f7 will always restore the X display.

It's a desktop. I just changed the default run level to 4 so it's not a big deal. I would like to know what causes that though.
