New Kernel and Alsa - an elegant way?

I crapped my notebook HDD and had to reinstall so I d/led dthe Slack9.1 discs and had a nice time

Anyway, I got the system working compiled my own kernel et voilą. Alsa sound is not working anymore - even though I expected it. That's probably because of the 2.6 Kernel support but we aren't there yet.

Usually I would get the alsa sources now and compile (at least) the drivers.

However this doesn't seem as it was intended to be but I can't think of a more elegant way right now.

Any ideas?

Maybe I should note that I've been using Alsa before but just not on that notebook and not via SlackwarePackages.

I have tried to set up sound on my toshiba laptop with 2.6 kernel and built in alsa support but haven't managed to...
Furthermore, I couldn't compile alsa-driver with this kernel: an error would come up and stop 'make' (I am not sure what it was anymore...) So, back to 2.4.22 for me...
Good luck, and if you found a way, let us know!

I did not install alsa from the Slackware CD's but downloaded source from the alsa web site.
They have detailed instructions and you can cut an paste the modules.conf entries.
After compiling a custom kernel I would recompile alsa-drivers, alsa-lib and alsa-utils. This requires the appropriate additions to modules.conf to load the alsa drivers. It is less elegant but has the advantage of only compiling the particular driver you need and makes it easy to upgrade alsa versions.

To make my life easier I just copied the alsaconf utilty (which I don't know where to download) from the slack packs and used it to configure my soundboard.... Does anybody know where to get alsaconf?

with the 2.6 kernel you cant compile the alsa-driver, nor do you need it fyi.

You just need the libs and the utils packages.
